Could Your Business Credentials Already Be on the Dark Web?

Your business credentials could already be circulating on the dark web without you knowing. Discover how passwords and login details become exposed, the risks they pose to your business, and how DRGroup's FREE Dark Web Scan can help identify compromised credentials before they're used against you.

You use your email address every day. Your passwords still work. Your systems appear to be running normally.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean your credentials haven’t been compromised.

Email addresses, passwords and other login credentials exposed through data breaches, phishing attacks or other cyber incidents can find their way onto the dark web, where stolen information may be shared, traded or sold.

And often, the business involved has no idea it’s there.

What is the dark web?

Most of us only interact with a small portion of the internet through search engines and publicly accessible websites.

Beyond this sits the deep web, which includes content that isn’t publicly indexed, such as online banking, email accounts and private databases. Within the deep web is the dark web – an anonymous part of the internet that requires specialist software to access.

While the dark web itself isn’t inherently illegal, its anonymity has made it a marketplace for stolen information, including compromised business credentials.

How do business credentials end up there?

There are plenty of ways credentials can become exposed.

An employee might enter their password into a convincing phishing page. A third-party website or service your team uses could experience a data breach. Someone may reuse the same password across multiple accounts, or credentials could be stolen through malware or another cyberattack.

Once information has been compromised, it may be collected, shared or sold – sometimes long after the original incident occurred.

That means an email address and password combination associated with your business could potentially be circulating online without you knowing about it.

Why do exposed credentials matter?

A compromised password doesn’t automatically mean someone has accessed your business.

But it does create a potential opportunity.

If an exposed password is still in use – particularly if it’s been reused across different accounts – a cybercriminal may try those credentials against Microsoft 365, email, cloud applications or other business systems.

That can potentially lead to unauthorised access, further credential theft, fraudulent emails or access to sensitive business information.

This is why identifying exposed credentials early matters.

Would you know if your credentials had been exposed?

This is the difficult part.

There may be no obvious warning.

Your email can continue working. Your password can continue working. Your day-to-day systems can appear completely normal.

That’s why dark web scanning can be a useful part of a wider cybersecurity approach.

Rather than waiting for compromised credentials to be used, scanning can help identify information associated with your business that has already been exposed.
